Very Subtle Pitfalls - Part 2

Como já disse na introdução a esta série, que denominei Very Subtle Pitfalls, de tempos em tempos, vou postar pequenas listas de sentenças erradas, cada qual contendo um(a) pitfall. Sei que há dezenas de sites de English pitfalls na internet, mas eu tenho a pretensão de achar que as minhas são originais, se é que isso é possível. No final das sentenças darei uma explicação resumida de cada problema. Mas já vou avisando: as tais pitfalls são realmente tricky e o exercício se destina realmente to those in the know.  Vamos lá?

Antes, porém, aqueles dois inescapáveis lembretes:

1.    All the wall has been painted white.

2.    “May I use your pen, please?”

“Sorry, I don’t have any.”

3.    I’d really appreciate if you didn’t tell anybody what I’ve just told you.

4.    I’m perhaps a bit too old-fashioned, bit I do not approve the way women dress today.

5.    First she sat in the couch. Then she stood up and sat on the chair next to the window. Finally she accommodated herself on the large armchair by the fire,

1.   Correção: The whole wall has been painted white. All não é, via de regra, usado antes de substantivos contáveis no singular. É preciso então usar whole;

wrong: The little boy ate all the apple pie.

right: The little boy ate the whole apple pie.

right: The little boy ate all the apple pies.

2.   Correção:

“May I use your cell phone, please?”

“Sorry, I don’t have one.” (Any não deve usado para substituir um substantivo contatável singular. Compare:

Right: He asked me for some money, but I didn’t lend him any.

Right: He asked me for some books, but I didn’t lend him any.

3.    Correção: I’d really appreciate it if you didn’t tell anybody what I’ve just told you. (O verbo to appreciate vem seguido de it.)

4.   Correção: I’m perhaps a bit too old-fashioned, bit I do not approve of the way women dress today. (Approve of: aprovar, considerar aceitável) precisa ser seguido de of.)

5.   Correção: First she sat on the couch. Then she stood up and sat on the chair next to the window. Finally she accommodated herself in the large armchair by the fire, (To sit on a chair, on a sofa or couch, in an armchair.)
