O 'melhor' dicionário - Parte 1

Existe o ‘melhor’ dicionário?

Às vezes me perguntam qual é o melhor dicionário inglês-inglês on line. Impossível responder a esta pergunta.

Primeiro, porque a variedade é muito grande. Se fosse possível fazer uma escolha entre dois, talvez três dicionários, quem sabe a decisão não fosse tão difícil. Mas, sem querer aborrecê-los demais, deem só uma espiada nesta pequena (e é pequena mesmo!) lista de dicionários, que eu dispus em ordem alfabética: American Heritage, Business Dictionary, Cambridge, Cobuild, Free dictionary, Linguee, Longman, Macmillan, Merriam-Webster, One Look, Oxford, Thesaurus,  Urban Dictionary, Wordnik e  Word Reference.  

Segundo, ‘melhor’ e ‘pior’ são conceitos subjetivos e variam de pessoa para pessoa. Qual o melhor filme da sua vida? E o livro que mais o impressionou? E a música mais linda? Cada um tem a sua resposta. Isso vale também para dicionários.

Eu fiz um teste: escolhi uma palavra qualquer (guzzler), pescada no The Guardian, e pesquisei-a em vários dicionários citados acima. Comparem:

Thesaurus: someone who drinks heavily (especially alcoholic beverages) Wordnik: An immoderate drinker. Free Dicitionary: guzzle (verb): to drink greedily or habitually; guzzler (noun) a person or thing that guzzles Cobuild:  a person or thing that guzzles Só que nenhuma dessas definições se aplicava ao contexto em que a palavra guzzler foi usada. Transcrevo o trecho do The Guardian, edição de 16/02/16: Alex Bellos's Monday puzzle Can you solve it? Are you smarter than a British 13-year-old? Eu só fui achar alguma ‘dica’ do significado de guzzler no texto do The Guardian neste artigo encontrado em www.questia.com: "Gas guzzler" is a popular term describing a car that consumes a lot of fuel per mile traveled. Such a car is generally considered ecologically and economically unsound. My wife and I once bought a secondhand car that was not only a gas guzzler but posed an even greater problem: it turned into a "thought-guzzler." As soon as we fixed one part of it, something else went wrong and required our attention. When we finally got rid of the car, we had lost money on it. But what a relief it was to be free from the constant demand it had been making on our toughts!”

Perceberam? Guzzlers. no The Guardian, quer dizer mais ou menos isso: gente que adora resolver charadas, enigmas, testes etc.
