Very Subtle Pitfalls

De tempos em tempos (o tempora, o mores!), vou postar pequenas listas de sentenças erradas, cada qual contendo um(a) pitfall. Sei que há dezenas de sites de English pitfalls na internet, mas eu tenho a pretensão de achar que as minhas são originais, se é que isso é possível. No final das sentenças darei uma explicação resumida de cada problema. Mas já vou avisando: as tais pitfalls são realmente tricky e o exercício se destina realmente to those in the know.  Vamos lá?

Antes, porém, aqueles dois lembretes:

1.   He did not accept to be nominated as the representative of their trade union.

2.   After they will close the gates nobody will be let in.

3.   The boy’s family agreed with the kidnappers' demands and he was freed three days later.

4.    “Live and allow others to live; hurt no one; life is dear to all alive beings.” (Mahavira)

5.    “You ask me why I do not write something…. I think one’s feelings waste themselves in words, they all ought to be distilled into actions and into actions which bring results.” (Florence Nightingale)

1.    Correção: He did not accept his nomination as the representative of their  trade union. (O verbo to accept não pode vir seguido de to-infinitive)

2.    Correção: After they close/have closed the gates nobody will be let in (Mesmo quando verbo que se segue a after se refere ao futuro, ele não pode estar no Simple Future. Tem de estar no Simple Present ou no Present Perfect.)

3.    Correção: The boy’s family agreed to the kidnappers' demands and he was freed three days later. (agree with: concordar com alguém, ter a mesma opinião de alguém; agree to: estar disposto a aceitar ou permitir algo.)

4.    Correção: Live and allow others to live; hurt no one; life is dear to all living beings. (Alive é um adjetivo predicativo, isto é, só pode ser usado após um verbo de ligação; living é um adjetivo atributivo, ou seja, vem antes de um substantivo.)

5.    Correção: You ask me why I do not write something…. I think one’s feelings waste themselves in words, they ought all to be distilled into actions and into actions which bring results. (all deve ser usado entre o sujeito e o verbo – se não houver um auxiliar – ou entre o auxiliar e o verbo principal.)
