Halcyon days

52. Halcyon days
Tradução: Dias de Halcyon
Significado: Dias extremamente tranquilos e felizes
Fonte: Henry VI, Parte I, Ato I, cena 2
Joan: Assign'd am I to be the English scourge
This night the siege assuredly I'll raise:
Expect Saint Martin's summer, halcyon days,
Since I have entered into these wars.

Exemplo moderno: Halcyon days: Arthur Hailey meets Downton Abbey in new period soap

When two things arrive which look more or less alike, the first out of the gate will most likely be branded the masterpiece and the second an ill-considered copy. When both are television shows the inclination will be much stronger, as television is – even on a good day – a hopelessly derivative form. (The Sydney Morning Herald, 31 March 2017)

Good men and true

51. Good men and true
Tradução: Homens bons e sinceros
Significado: Gente honrada
Fonte: Much Ado About Nothing, Ato III, cena 3
Dogberry: Are you good men and true?
Verges: Yes, or else it were pity but they should suffer salvation, body and soul.

Dogberry: Sois gente honrada e fiel?
Exemplo moderno: Recent News:Twelve Good Men… and True
When this phrase was first used in the 17th century, it referred to a jury composed of trustworthy men: ‘he was convicted by a jury of 12 good men and true. Not a wino in the lot’. In those days the word ‘good’ implied distinguished rank or valour. These days, people are not required to be valiant or of high rank, in order to be part of a jury or in this case, one of the Riverland’s highest achieving industry committees, The Riverland Vine Improvement Committee (RVIC). Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears

Shakespeare na mídia contemporânea

50. Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears
Tradução: Amigos, romanos, compatriotas, ouvi-me
Fonte: Julius Caesar, Ato III, cena 2
Marcus Antonius: Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears! I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.

Marco Antônio: Amigos, romanos, compatriotas, ouvi-me!

Exemplo moderno: Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears

Most of us probably remember this phrase from Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” from our high school English literature classes in which Mark Antony’s funeral oration about Caesar teaches us about the skills of oral presentation. However, these words can also introduce medical conditions which are very common and often poorly understood and treated. A recent clinical practice guideline issued by the American Academy of Otolaryngology contains an update for best practices for diagnosis and treatment of earwax (cerumen impaction). The report states that: “Excessive or impacted cerumen is present in 1 in 10 children, 1 in 20 adults, and more than one-third of the geriatric and (similar) populations…” (Independent, 10 June 2017)

Frailty, thy name is woman

49. Frailty, thy name is woman
Tradução: Fragilidade, teu nome é mulher.
Significado:  A mulher é inconstante.
Fonte: Hamlet, Ato I, cena 2
Hamlet: Heaven and earth!
Must I remember? why, she would hang on him,
As if increase of appetite had grown
By what it fed on: and yet, within a month--
Let me not think on't--Frailty, thy name is woman!--

Hamlet: Céu e terra!
Preciso recordar? Vivia a ele agarrada,

Exemplo moderno: Frailty, thy name is not woman. Thy name, in truth, is man.
With apologies to William shakespeare, who said in great dramatic flourish and rhetoric in the play Hamlet “Frailty, thy name is woman!”, I have to disagree with him, at least today being  Women’s Day! It is one of the memorable expressions from that play and has over the years become proverbial. (Star of my Sore, 9 June 2017)

Foul play

Shakespeare na mídia contemporânea

48. Foul play
Tradução: Jogo sujo
Significado: Atitude desonesta
Fonte: Hamlet, Ato I, cena 2
Hamlet: My father's spirit in arms! all is not well;
I doubt some foul play: would the night were come!
Till then sit still, my soul: foul deeds will rise,
Though all the earth o'erwhelm them, to men's eyes.

houvesse chegado!

Exemplo moderno: Foul play suspected in fatal Dundee Township house fire

Authorities suspect foul play after one person and a dog were found dead early Wednesday in a Dundee Township house fire. (Daily Herald, 8 June 2017)

For ever and a day

47. For ever and a day
Tradução: Para sempre e mais um dia
Significado: Por toda a eternidade
Fonte: As You Like It, Ato IV, cena 1
Rosalind: Now tell me how long you would have her after you have possessed her?
Orlando: For ever and a day.

Orlando:  Por toda a eternidade.

Exemplo moderno: The risks of the Macron approach

Now that Emmanuel Macron has won the election, for the time being the probability of the euro area breaking up has fallen. However, what real promise do his ideas really hold?

The daner with Macron’s approach, on the other hand, is that no country would practice public spending discipline any longer and necessary reforms would be postponed for ever and a day, setting the stage for the next crisis. (https://www.helaba.com, 15 May 2017)

Flesh and blood

 47. Flesh and blood
Tradução: Sangue do próprio sangue
Significado: A nossa família
Fonte:  Hamlet, Ato I, cena 5
Ghost: But this eternal blazon must not be
To ears of flesh and blood. List, Hamlet, O, list!

Escuta, Hamlet, oh, escuta!

Exemplo moderno: ‘Flesh and Blood’: Film Review | SXSW 2017

Mark Webber enlisted his mother and brother to play versions of themselves in his fourth film, a fiction-nonfiction hybrid that draws upon his unconventional family history. (The Hollywood Reporter,11 March 2017)
